Frequently Asked Questions

What is DanceSport?

DanceSport is competitive ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing is a form of partner dancing. You get to learn dances like the waltz and tango, and also dances like cha cha and rumba! It’s a great way to meet new people and learn how to dance! No partner necessary!

Do I need any thing to come to beginner lessons?

Nope! Just wear something you’re comfortable moving around in, and shoes that don’t stick to the floor (socks work great!) You’ll see most of our dancers showing up to beginner lessons in t-shirts and leggings or athletic shorts, or whatever they wore to class that day.

What are competitions like?

It’s a full day of dancing and a whole lot of fun! Our dancers get to show off the skills they’ve been learning on a floor with dancers from all around the Midwest. Don’t be afraid to ask the senior members for their thoughts!

Not at all! Our beginner classes start with teaching the lead and follow parts separately, and once you’ve learned the moves, you pair up with a random partner and rotate to a different partner every few minutes or so. Even if you already have a partner, you won’t be dancing with them the whole time!

Do I need a partner?

Only if you want to! Competing with our team is not a requirement to be considered an active member of the club. Feel free to drop by lessons once in a while and join us for social events!

Am I required to compete?

Absolutely not! In fact, most of our dancers haven’t had any prior dance experience before joining DanceSport! We teach everything from the bottom up, and we believe that as long as you want to dance, you can dance.

Do I need any prior dancing experience?
