Beginner Lessons

Figuring out new things can be scary– but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you are looking for advice for what to wear to a beginner class or what to expect at your first competition, we’ve got it all consolidated right here.

What to wear to a lesson

Anything you are comfortable moving in– athletic shorts, sweatpants, leggings, or yoga pants all work well! No special shoes needed either– socks will serve you just fine.

How do Lessons work? Do I need a Partner?

Socks work great at our beginner lessons!

We have 2 lessons geared towards beginners each week, which are our Beginner I and II classes. We teach everything from scratch at both lessons so even if you couldn’t catch Beginner I on Monday, don’t hesitate coming to Beginner II on Thursday! You’ll see a quick demonstration of the dance you’ll be learning and split up into one of two parts, leads or follows, to learn the moves. After the instructors feel that you are ready, they’ll tell people to pair up and circle around the room. If you don’t have a partner– don’t worry! After you practice the move a couple of times with a partner, everyone rotates partners so no one is left out.

So much focus! Practicing the moves apart while the instructors demonstrate it together

Uhhh Why does it seem like everyone is better than me?

It’s always difficult trying something new! We all started in your shoes (or socks, rather) as newcomers–even the really experienced members. Like all other art forms, dance takes time and practice. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class! The instructors are there to help you! There are also plenty of friendly experienced dancers who would be more than willing to help out as well. Many of our experienced dancers are happy to meet with you outside of our usual lesson time to provide mentoring and 1-on-1 feedback. If you’re interested in mentoring, reach out to one of the upper-level members, or consult the mentoring directory in the club Linktree.

You can do it! We believe in you :)
