American Cha-Cha | Rhythm
Welcome to American Cha-Cha! You may know that we’ve already covered Cha-Cha this year, but not American Cha-Cha. In fact, the next few dances are all going to be American style dances. There will be some similarities between some American and International dances, but some are wildly different!
American Cha-Cha has a different rhythm from International Cha-Cha, so try listening to some music! American Cha-Cha (Youtube)
The Routine
See if you can recognize any of these moves from International Cha Cha!
The Moves
The Basic
Most moves in American Cha-Cha are going to look very similar to International, so we strongly recommend coming to lessons to learn the subtleties and differences.
Outside Breaks
Similar to the basic steps, but with the Lead stepping forward on both steps.
Here are some additional clips to highlight the steps of each partner.
CRoss-body Lead
Here is a new step for American Cha-Cha! The cross-body lead leads the Follow across the Lead’s body. Ballroom has great naming conventions!
The Follow’s Part
Here is a bonus clip to highlight the Follow’s footwork.
Crossover Breaks, Hand-to-hand, and Spot Turns
You may remember these moves from International Cha Cha, but they’re also just as important in American! This video contains a series of all three. We hope this refreshes your memory on them!
There’s also a video following the lead and follow’s parts from their view.
POsitions
You may hear some weird terms thrown around such as closed position or promenade position. We have a video explaining what these mean and how you should look said positions!
That’s it for our lesson! If you want to learn more, join us at our meetings and send us any questions you might have! Thank you to Abigail, Michael, and Dana for filming these videos and keeping us practicing!
